If you’re trying to figure out how to create an online course, you’ve come to the right place. We’re passionate about creating online courses for 2 reasons:
- Everyone has knowledge, no matter how obscure, that can be turned into multimedia online training. Stepping into more meaningful work that makes you happy is possible!
- An online course is more valuable than just writing an ebook. It’s a smarter investment of your time if you’re trying to create a passive income stream which can create more time, location, and creative freedom in your life.
Pick your course topic
When you first think about how to create an online course, it can be overwhelming trying to figure what to make a course about. You must fight the urge to put ALL your knowledge and passions into one course. Human beings are complex. Our skills and experience are vast and span multiple topics. It can feel relieving to isolate only one problem you wish to address in your online course and commit to create an online course about that one topic.
Pick your problem
Great courses solve a specific problem. Get really clear on the problem your course will solve and exactly who the material is intended for.
Average courses offer suggestions. Great courses provide solutions.
How to create an online course … the content
Courses are more valuable because they offer multimedia content like text, video, and audio. This format is more valuable because it will appeal to different learning styles. Some learners like to read. Others learn best by listening to audio. And others prefer video.
By creating all of these types of content, you will naturally produce a more valuable product and build a better connection with your students because they will hear your voice in the audio and see you in the video (although you can create videos without being directly on camera yourself.)
There are 3 ways to get your course material:
- You can be the expert and present on your topic.
- You can play the role of researcher or curator and collect the content from other experts on solving the problem your course addresses.
- You can do a hybrid of these 2.
The mindset of a Course Creator
There is WAY LESS competition in the online course space for several reasons. Many people have personal confidence issues and self worth issues around publicly going on the record as an expert on a topic. The other main road block that creates such a large opportunity in the online course space is that people feel intimidated by the technology required as they figure out how to make an online course. This is why people often take the easier route of just writing an ebook. As you’re aware the internet is full of ebooks, which is great, but ebooks are fast becoming a commodity and not as valuable as they once were.
There are several mindset shifts I recommend you make for becoming an online course creator. Here I’m going to offer you the two most important ones:
You don’t have to be the best in the world at something to teach it. You just have to know a little more about your topic than your audience and genuinely help them solve a problem.
Technology is second to content. It’s more important to just deliver your content that helps people than to make perfect looking videos and studio quality audio. The truth is you could make the whole course with just your iphone. Course content is king, not technology.
