Raw Food Parenting Wisdom From The Raw Food Family
Ka Sundance of the Raw Food Family generously accepted this interview from his current family outpost in Thailand. The Raw Food Family is raising four raw kids and lives on a healthy, natural mostly raw diet since more than 8 years. They teach families about healthy nutrition for children, and publish frequently to their youtube channel. They eat mostly locally grown, organic food, and also fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, roots and other natural non-processed superfoods while traveling and living for extended periods in places like Thailand and Costa Rica.
1) What are the most important things to consider when deciding to raise raw or mostly raw children from the beginning?
The most important thing if you want to raise kids mostly raw… Well first, we’re not recommending to do it 100% raw anymore. Or at least it’s not absolutely necessary in our opinion. We’ve been doing this for eight years now. The most important thing is that you walk your talk. So often, we have done this so many years and helped so many parents, and the biggest problem in my eyes seems to be that parents want the best for their kids, and of course they do, but they want their kids to eat more healthy than they do themselves. And this does not work. It is like sitting in a chair with a beer bottle in one hand and a cigarette in the other hand and then telling your kids not to smoke and not to drink. You can’t do that, you have to walk your talk. If you wan to get your kids excited about raw foods, you have to be excited about raw foods yourself.
And you need to help them to not only want to eat nuts and dried fruit, but also veggies and salads and dark green leafy vegetables. It’s important that you eat them with passion and enthusiasm yourself.
Secondly, you need to be educated. You need to know what you are doing. There is a lot you can be doing wrong, especially if you go on a very high raw food diet. Don’t harm your kids by being ignorant about this lifestyle. Get an education. Get online. Get some books. Educate yourself so you know what you’re doing.
Thirdly, don’t limit them. Let them eat as much as they want. Especially if you live up north – you can’t survive on a high raw diet by eating just a mango. They should be able to eat ten mangos if they want. Let them eat as much as they want. Give them dark green leafy vegetable juices. The salad alone will not do. Lettuce alone is not good enough. It has to include kale, spinach, and especially wild herbs.
And I recommend juicing because kids will not eat dark green leafy veggies in sufficient amounts. And they need that because it’s the most mineral rich food, and it’s important not to get them demineralized. They need to have dark green leafy veggies in their diet. That is our experience and knowledge and the best way to do that is through juicing. I also want to add coconut and coconut water as a natural super food, super-charged with electrolytes and so many nutrients. So coconut water, dark green leafy veggies and, natural super foods – this is what I would consider.
2) What words of wisdom can you pass along about maintaining healthy food habits long term beyond it just being a diet, experiment, or challenge?
I think it has a lot to do with your commitment. How committed are you to do this? What are your reasons actually? You need to have a strong reason to do this long term.
And you will have to look into emotional stuff. If you really want to do this long term, food is so often connected with emotional issues, so emotional stuff will come up. You have to look at that and deal with that. If you really want to make the transition, find the reasons to stay and stick with the diet. Make it delicious. Get good recipes in place. Don’t under-eat. If you eat healthy, you don’t have to limit yourself. You can eat as much as you want.
3) What’s your vision for the future when it comes to the raw food diet and humanity?
I envision that we will be a planet and civilization that is living together in love, peace, harmony, and health – going more natural than we are right now. You all may say I’m a dreamer, but I tell you, I’m not the only one. We can do this. We are in the hundred of thousands by now … millions by now – getting the word out. We can eat more healthy. We will not eat more junk food and unhealthy stuff because it’s just going to make us sick and more people are going to realize that.
